Gettin´ Busy

Hey all--

Amazingly two months have passed since I arrived in my town, Nueva Ixtahuacán. While I had plenty of free time in the first few weeks, I have rapidly been becoming very busy and now am wondering if I will be able to get it all done. This week, I will be teaching primary school classes about garbage and waste management in the mornings, beginning teaching English and Environmental Education in the Instituto Magisterio (high school aged, studying to become teachers), working on natural disaster preparation workshops in the outlying communities, and stirring the pot on future reforestation and infrastructure projects. It is good to be busy, and I am still finding time for cooking, playing with my little friends, and the occasional run in the mountains.

The rainy season is upon us, which means that cold rains fall in the afternoons, though sometimes we get some sun in the mornings. I don´t mind much, though getting stuck in the back of a pickup truck during a torrential downpour is never a good time. Yesterday we had a little hail squall, though the pellets were very small--my friend Victoriano told me ¨John, this is nothing. You just wait¨. Later the clouds cleared out and a carpet of stars stretched across the night sky, though a lightning storm continued to flash about ten miles to the south. The weather sure is amazing at 10,000 feet.

Love to you all.
